Fashion Of The 1930's

Clothing was mended and patched before being replaced and women began to sew more Darts were replaced by soft gathers. Dress waists returned to the natural waistline. Moderately full skirts accentuated a small waist and minimized the hips.

Dress bodices were designed with inset pieces and yokes. Necklines received dramatic attention, often with wide scallop-edged or ruffled collars.

Skirts were designed with great detail. Movie star endorsements of styles and accessories became common, especially with evening wear. Fabric flowers might be placed at the center neckline.

The peplum made its debut in the late thirties evening wear. Fur capes, coats, stoles wraps, accessories and trimmings adorned women's dresses.

Sport suits, leather jackets and middy slacks became popular. Pill boxes became popular along with brimmed hats.

Pumps and flat shoes were available, and ankle strap styles with moderate heels appeared. Slip-on styles, lace-up and buckle shoes were all worn. Beaded bags were abundant, as well as enameled mesh bags. Prior to this, manufactured fibers had been developed to emulate natural fibers.

1930s Wedding

Fewer people had access to luxury items in terms of food, education, transport. New fabrics were developed at this time, but silk remained the best fabric for the matchless way that it falls. Comfort became paramount as women began entering the workplace. The halter neck and cowl neck were developed during this time. Full length backless dresses that were cut on the bias drew more attention to the female form than ever before. Shop for original pieces online, scour antique shops, or get a dressmaker with a real sense of what you want to create your perfect wedding dress.

Trousers were wide and suits were usually in muted greys and blues. It was imperative during this time to match your shoes, gloves, hat and bag. Men wore neckties that boasted bold stripes and geometric shapes.
Men’s hair was short and very well kept, while moustaches were considered to be very fashionable indeed.
Eye colour became more daring, offering women blues, purples, greens and browns, as well as shimmery shades for more dramatic looks. Light and dark reds and pinks characterised this period.

Because of the general lack of money during this time, the food was not as elaborate as before. Some ideas for your wedding menu include:

Celtic Wedding Traditions

If you research quaint marriage customs from the past, much of what you will find describes the folk ways of largely pastoral, rural people. It was customary to salute the bride and groom by firing guns in the air outside the church. The salmon leap was the traditional way the groom joined his bride in the wedding bed. An heirloom from the old country, if available can be used as something old.

Musical traditions travel through time much better. If communion is served at a wedding, a piper can play during that time also. Celtic wedding dresses are another opportunity to incorporate some tradition. Kilts for the groom and attendants can be hired for weddings if they do not own their own.

Weddings are a unique moment when the bride and groom are the center of attention at a party that they and their family offers to their friends and relatives. As the wedding at Cana shows, a wedding cannot be allowed to become a social crisis.

Medieval marriages were, at least in theory, sanctioned and governed by the Christian church. Early formalities of church weddings consisted quite simply of the couple meeting at the door of the local church, but outside it, to receive the blessing of the priest. Both civil and ecclesiastical laws governing marriage in European countries evolved to discourage informal and secret marriages.

Canon Law, the law of the church governing marriage was no longer universal. In Scotland, Marriage by Declaration was once quite common and remained legal and valid until 1939. Issues of sobriety at the time of the declaration as well as possibility of misunderstandings about whether the declaration was of betrothal or actual marriage could put the relationship in doubt, lacking reliable witnesses. Established Church records are very good for weddings and baptisms going back well into the 18th century.

In some places and times it seems to mean betrothal and in others genuine marriage. Never-the-less the mythical "trial marriage" handfasting is now pretty well established in some circles, according to the historical novel tradition would normally lead to regular permanent and valid marriage but if either parties chose to leave, the relationship was null, it is claimed is a holdover from pre-Christian Celtic marriage laws, can be part of the religious or civil wedding ceremony.

It is a crime for clergy to knowingly perform marriages that would not be legally binding. Religious sects have rules about what they allow as well.

Why Clean and Preserve Your Bridal Gown?
Procrastination poses some serious risks to the gown:
1.  Body perspiration may cause the dress lining to turn brittle over time.
2.  Gowns kept in plastic gown bags are exposed to the most harmful environment possible: plastic fumes. Some brides take the initiative to get their dress cleaned, but still leave their gown in the dry-cleaner's plastic wrap.

Cleaning and preserving your bridal gown as soon as possible ensures that your gown remains in the best condition possible. Ideally, your dress should be cleaned and preserved within days of your wedding.
